eBay data breach: Protect your identity!

The newest to the list of alarming security breaches is eBay. eBay encountered an attack last week which led to its entire user database to be compromised. Hackers accessed and stole personal information such as names, dates of birth, physical addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers and encrypted passwords.

Many of the users have yet to know about this recent hack unless they have recently visited the website, but eBay has started notifying users by email. If you are an eBay user and have yet to get this email, be sure to head over to eBay’s main site and change your password as soon as possible. eBay’s notification email of the breach is requesting that all users change their password, and also for any other sites where the same password was used. eBay did not provide any links in their email, so they are advising that if you have received an email that appears to be from eBay and it provided a link to not click on it. For security measures go directly to the website, and if you have received such an email it is best to delete it.

No financial information was stolen, and PayPal information also remains safe. eBay is urging its users to change their passwords as a safety measure, but this does not eliminate the fact that consumer’s personal information was compromised. The access to this personal information by hackers can make eBay users prone to phishing scams and identity theft. Be careful of any emails requesting any detailed information such as credit card or financial information or any other form of unusual communication by mail and phone.

Security breach or not we always strongly recommend that consumers constantly monitor their bank statements and credit. If you have already accessed your free annual report and want to be cautious and keep an eye on your credit you can also enroll into credit monitoring services such as Score Safety.

If you have encountered any suspicious activity we recommend you freeze your credit reports and request a fraud alert to be placed. Be sure to inform your financial institution as well. If you need assistance disputing any fraudulent or inaccurate information feel free to contact us at MSI Credit Solutions for a free no obligation consultation.
